Arrested singing

Another eventful week.  After spending four days mixing my new album at Ca Va Sound in Glasgow I went to Faslane to join the Power of the Word blockade.  We were a group of actors, musicians and writers and assembled outside the WMD base on Tuesday morning with our banners and a PA system through which we spoke, sang and recited poetry.  Our previous Power of the Word blockade in December 2006 attracted the likes of Billy Bragg and Roy Bailey.  This time we had actor Roger Lloyd Pack, writer AL Kennedy, Theo Simon from Seize the Day, and many others participating.  Five of us got arrested (singing!) and were taken to Dumbarton police station where we were held for six hours for breach of the peace.  Go to my photo gallery Singing Out to see a photo of me mid-arrest.  I pointed out to the officers arresting me that I was not breaking the law, but rather the existence of Trident was contravening international law and that as an international citizen I was merely carrying out my civic duty.  Most of the police officers I spoke to are against Trident, so that's encouraging.  In fact now that we have a Scottish Executive and a Scottish population (about 80%) plus a Scottish police force against these weapons, I think we are close to achieving disarmament.  The arguments have been won - it's now up to us to take action to deal the final blow.
